upcycling in the garden

I have a lot of shade and woodland beds. I try to use more natural materials with the paths in between them.

I had been using wood chips with tree cookies from the massive oak we had taken down a few years ago now. Well, the tree cookies broke down and kind of have become one with the soil so I needed something else for a path. Think of it as a garden boardwalk.

So towards the beginning of the summer a friend gifted me these leftover tropical hardwood tiles/pavers. I was looking for something to replace the tree cookies for a while. I don’t know if the wood is acacia or something else. But this tropical wood lasts a really long time so I won’t have to do this for years again.

A friend of mine who helps me from time to time with heavy garden stuff was in town, so he was nice enough to be my labor because each of these wood tile/paver sections is a good 20 pounds plus. And they laid in very well. There is some settling that will have to occur and that will happen naturally once I get another good rain.

I am actually really happy with the way this turned out and I think it looks really nice. And it gives a bit of an edge to some of these beds.

So I just thought I would throw this up and people could see it because a lot of times people have these tiles left over from decking projects. It gives a more natural beauty I think to shade and woodland beds. I honestly didn’t know if it would work until I tried it and I’m glad I did.

I also inherited a new old plant rack from a neighbor that I am using for my amaryllis bulbs. My amaryllis bulbs stay outside until after the first frost, and then they get cut back and hit the dark in the basement.

Other than that, it is ridiculously hot out, and there are too many stinging, biting things.
