and so a new season begins.

I am totally behind. I have so much to do and I haven’t even started my seeds yet. I probably won’t start my seeds for another week.

I have been out in the garden and one of the things I am loving or the daffodils coming up in the lawn. You see, I have been working on a stinzenplanten lawn (also known as a stinzen garden or more simply a stinze.)

I have been planting crocuses and other little tiny bulbs, and last fall I decided to see how Daffodils would do. So I’ve been using some little teeny daffodils, and I’m totally thrilled with the results. i’m already looking for little Daffodils for planting in the fall. It’s the prettiest thing I can’t believe it took me this long to try this.

We’re not really lawn people which is sacrilege to some of my neighbors but I would rather plant flowers. And because of bees we don’t use a lot of chemicals especially in grass so these little early bulbs look pretty and they do good. Ironically my friend and amazing garden author Jenny Rose Carey was speaking about this yesterday on her Instagram feed. Oh, and her next book is all about bulbs, so I can’t wait!

Spring really kind of started early even if today is the first official day later in the day. I have a lot of bulbs up earlier than ever and I’ve pretty much just been enjoying this. It’s the calm before the storm of new season gardening.

I have done a little pruning and sadly because I did a hard prune on my pussy willows last fall. I didn’t get my flush of prettiness before the bulbs start it, except for the pink pussy willow, which was too small to trim, but sometimes you just have to do these things, and the plants will reward me by coming back stronger than ever.

The tree peonies are all budding, and even my roses are showing new growth. But it’s too early to feed anything and the peonies. I will feed a little later on when I dig in granular nutrients in the flowerbeds. My beds are pretty good most of the time because I add so much organic material as far as shredded leaves, pine straw mulch, and what not.

And I saw one of our pileated woodpeckers today!

I hope you are enjoying your gardens waking up!
