get your gardening on

These are the days in the garden where it feels like something new is happening almost every hour. Plants are emerging from their winter slumber and in my case, I get to evaluate deer damage.

I did pretty well over the winter although I have had some deer and weather related losses. So plants are being replaced and I’m doubling down on my spraying.

The late season daffodils are now starting to revel in their glory, and a lot of the others are fading. I have been deadheading the daffodils, although I do not cut down the greens. I do cut off the spent blossoms. The greens of the bulbs? Well I just let do their thing until they fade and dry up on their own. If I cut them, the bulbs don’t feed for next year.

I have already started ordering more daffodil bulbs for the fall, and the focus remains the lawn. Operation stinzenplanten lawn is still in effect. I have totally enjoyed watching all the little bulbs pop up in the lawn.

I found that the little naturalizing species tulips don’t seem palatable to critters thus far.

I have fed all of the roses, and as you know, their numbers have grown over the years if you have followed my garden journey. I have put down the pine straw mulch on the select beds. I use it on, and I have a few more bales to go on woodland beds.

The first great ostrich fern giveaway of the season occurred yesterday. I thinned out five 3 gallon pots of ostrich ferns and gave them away.

I have plenty of things to plant, but they are living in my greenhouse because all I need is one good hard frost night before Mother’s Day and I’ll be out money on a lot of plants and I’ve done that before.

The seeds I am starting are on the dining room table. Yes, the dining room table. It gives them the best environment and they are popping. I am once again, growing basil, tomatoes, and chili peppers. I have found that they do better if I can grow them from seed. I don’t know why, it’s just my experience.

I have been also wandering around wondering if there are certain things I’m going to rearrange. I’m not sure yet. I do know that I also want to keep planting tree saplings in my woods. I plant natives and hardwoods. I also want to add more witch hazel to my garden but everybody is sold out of the colors. I prefer. I love the reds and the rust colors the best.

Soon it will be time to bring out the ceramic bird baths, and I will remember to add my older pennies to help keep the water clean.

Well, that’s all I’ve got for everyone today. I apologize. I seem a little boring. It’s just now as the season to be outside and I will be updating this gardening blog as I have time.

 Happy gardening everyone!
